My pedometers used to always "pop" off of my waistband when I moved. I lost several and broke a few when this happened. Since I've been using the Personal Trainer: Walking pedometers for Nintendo DS, this hasn't happened.
MORE INFORMATION:
The Personal Trainer: Walking cartridge comes with 2 pedometers that you can clip on if you like, but you can also stick them in your pocket. This is what I like. They're accurate & don't get in your way. You can also use the cartridge to view your activity over the day. Very helpful sometimes.

Great idea. I use a Garmin for distance. I run usually but have used it walking.

If you loop it through your belt loop and then clip it you wont lose it. They really do pop off all the time it seems! When I don't have belt loops I loop it through my underwear and then clip it to my waistband:)

Never used a pedometer?
If you've never tried using a pedometer and would like to, check your public library. Ours has them to loan out for free, for 3-week periods. I haven't tried it (I have a pedometer), but if you do make sure you get a manual to go with. The settings on pedometers all work differently.
