Look at the listed ingredients of any item you're thinking about buying/eating, and really think about what those ingredients are. The idea of putting unknown chemicals into my system is sometimes enough to make me put it down!
Also, as a good rule of thumb, don't eat anything with sugar or some form of sugar listed as the main ingredient (i.e. the first item on the list. Anything that ends in -ose is a sugar.).

Try to eat only fresh food in it's most natural state. Do most of your grocery shopping around the perimeter of the store, staying out of all of the boxed and canned goods. Most importantly, read the ingredients list. Put it back on the shelf if it has sugar, high fructose corn syrup, or any other ingredient that you cannot pronounce.
