Instead of using your card get in the habit of having envelopes for all your bills. At pay day cash your check and put whatever is due in the envelopes. In that way you will not get tempted to use the bank card because you are seeing all this money in it and when bill time comes around you will have it ready and to be paid. The remainder save it. If you are done paying off a car continue to take the money and put in savings as if you are still paying for it.

I have found this method to work for saving money: get envelopes and label them with your bills you pay monthly (ie mortgage, light bill, water bill, etc.) and label one envelope Miscellaneous. Each month put the amount you owe on the bill plus $10 in the envelope. Pay the miscellaneous envelope $20. Once you pay all your bills, move the money from the other envelopes to the miscellaneous envelope and watch your money build up!
I have a 3 part system set up when I receive mail that consists of a 9" x 12" box, a reusable bag, and a crate of 9" x 12" yellow envelopes. When you open mail, for example those pesky credit card offers, separate what has no personal information and that which does. No personal info in the bag then later to my library which has a dumpster for recycling paper. If the personal info is only in one spot I tear it out and put it in the box to be shredded and recycle the rest.
Do this for all mail. That which you need to save throw in an envelope. I have one envelope for statements from banks, a different one for each statement if you receive multiples. I also have envelopes for product instructions or any other papers I need to hold onto. Most used envelopes in front.
Saving for unexpected necessities/ avoiding credit cards
In order to be prepared for the unexpected repairs on your car or household appliance, start putting $5 or $10 in an envelope every payday. Label the envelope for the items being saved for. For example, we have an envelope for car maintenance, one for house maintenance, and one for medical expense
My husband started us doing this and it made me frustrated at first, but when one of those unexpected things like fixing a mechanical problem on the car happens, it is such a life saver. This way you don't have to use a credit card to pay for the unexpected! 48
