I bought several of those little belt-attachment or keychain-attachment battery-powered bike lights (the ones that bikers use to ride at night; they're sold in bike shops and outdoor equipment stores), and I keep one in each of my carrybags, so that I can take outdoor walks at night (or as night is approaching) and feel less worry about my safety. The lights are really bright, and last a long time!!

Thanks for that secret, I have been thinking about how I'm going to get in my runs/walks at night, now that it gets dark earlier. I think I'll be investing in one of those lights!

Get a water bottle that you like. Your bottle can be just as much a part of your outfit as your purse. Then take it with you. If you like looking at it, then you'll like having it around. AND it's easier to keep track of oz, when the size doesn't change. Mine is an orange Nalgene, with a yellow lid!

If you live in a safe area, walking at night during the summer makes for a much cooler walk. We feel more energetic walking after dark than under the hot sun, so we walk farther & faster & run into less traffic.... (more info)

We bought reflective vests (about $3/ea) at Harbor Freight, hat lights on eBay, & yellow rain ponchos at a surplus store, so we are well-equipped for night walks. We even walk late in the winter to avoid traffic ---we dress for the cold weather, but generate our own heat with a fast pace.
