I believe that the word "NO" has a huge part in being happy & positive. It can keep you from being overwhelmed with unnecessary things in your life.

I agree with the other 2 commenters - the word "no" and learning how to use it when you really don't want to do something is VERY powerful!

Actually, I have found that saying "No" has been helpful to me. I used to never say "No" and I was so overextended with a full-time job, my own small business, and dozens of volunteer events that I was totally stressed.

Several times I wanted to quit a committee. I used to try to find someone to take my place before I left. But, in that circumstance, no one volunteered. But the minute I actually quit, someone would step up to take my place. So if I have served an organization for a while, I give a 2-month notice that I am moving on to something else.

Now I volunteer for one large commitment and will occasionally do a one-time or one-day job like making an appetizer or creating a logo. When asked to do more, I say I am on the blank committee for the blank organization and I can't do any more at this time.
