To avoid eating too much, just have one bite, and then go and do something else (away from where you just put away the dessert). If you can't forget about more, go and have another bite, then go do something else. Most of the time, I forget to go back for more than a bite or two.

I take 1/2 cup of cooked winter (hard-shell) squash and mix in one packet of stevia and 1/2 tbsp. of cinnamon. That's it! It's like eating pumpkin pie without the crust with the added bene of fiber (helps satisfy hunger). You may also use pumpkin pie spice or ground cloves to your liking. Enjoy!
Cut a small apple into approximately 12 slices, removing the core. Removing the peel is optional. Place the apple slices in a microwave-safe bowl and sprinkle with a little cinnamon. Also add a small amount of sugar or sweetener. Microwave on high for 1 to 1 1/2 minutes. Enjoy.
