Bread Is A Diet Killer

My weight loss sped up considerably when I got rid of the bread in my diet. A lot of diets call for bread, toast, even whole grain stuff still didn't cut it for me. Instead I found rice bread which is very good and chow down on a lot of almonds. Bread is not really a 'natural food", not like fruits and veggies -- so why do we need it?

    I can't eat a lot of bread, because leavening makes me sick. However, I think whole grains are good for us. Kashi makes some great cereal, and you can get the recommended whole grains for the day by just eating a bowl of cereal in the morning. I recently tried their 7 Whole Grain Nuggets, which is very good.

    In the Fat Flush by Ann Louise Gittleman, PhD. she has you cut out bread in phase 1. In phase 2 or 3 (I can't remember which off hand) she allows 1 slice of bread but not with wheat because a lot of people have allergies to wheat. She recommends sprouted grains bread. You slowly reintroduce foods one type at a time to see if you have an allergic reaction of any sort.

I haven't cut out bread completely but I did while on Fat Flush and even now I cut back. I don't eat it nearly as much as I used to. But I love bread and I will not give it up. I have found healthier alternatives which can be pricey but since I don't eat as much my bread can go a long time. Ezekiel brand has a sprouted bread and Sprouts has a wide variety of sprouted breads.

    According to some scientific sources, sprouted grains are metabolized as vegetables by the body and not as starches that turn into sugars and then are stored as fat. Eating sprouted grain breads, tortillas, etc. (i.e. Ezekiel brand) can help you to lose weight.

    Bread is my downfall. I've given it up for six weeks (for the most part, with very few exceptions) I do miss it but I have lost some weight. I'm going to have to try that sprouted bread! emoticon

    You're right about regular white bread ... not much nutritional value - just empty calories. But I've discovered I NEVER gain weight eating sprouted whole-grain bread, even if I have 3 slices in a day! (I like toasted Shiloh Farms 7-Grain, sodium-free.) Maybe it's just me, but I don't think so.
