When I started this journey, walking more than a couple of blocks was hard work. By keeping at it and doing just a little more each day, it got easier and the weight started coming off. Now I'm running, not just walking! Whatever form of exercise you choose to do, keep doing it and adding just a little more each day or each week; you will be amazed at the progress you make by pushing yourself to do just a little more.

Thanks for your great tip! I just began to increase my distance and intensity in my walking and it feels great when I finish knowing that I have done more.

I agree, plus I like to try new things to keep from becoming bored with the same exercise every week.

A little bit more each day is the way ... that way you don't burn out and you avoid injury from doing too much to fast and then have to lay off only to start over.

Now that I am five weeks out from my knee replacement, I can walk past 24 houses on my block--and it takes about 15 minutes. What I plan to do is build up so that I am walking a total of at least 30 minutes--it isn't how far that matters so much as that I make the commitment to walk for at least 30 minutes per day. I am thinking of using the treadmill at first just so I know how far I can go--once I can do a mile in the 30 minute timeframe, I know that I will be ready to walk outside, where we sometimes go two miles once our speed is up. I look forward to a day when I can even do a 5k--it may only be to walk one, but I am determined!
GINGERVISTA6/20/2012 9:29:00 AM
I know, right? Started with the (recommended) 10 minutes & built on from there. And I the C25K program, where--same thing--start running 60 seconds, then walk until after several months you're doing a 5K!

Fitting in exercise
I have very little time to exercise during the week (desk job, long commute). In order to fit in a little bit of exercise, I'll do leg rises, squats, push ups off the counter, etc at any point I can fit it in, even while waiting at the copier!

It makes me at least feel like I'm doing something!
Break your two minutes of brushing time into 30 second segments. Do a wall sit during the first 30, rest during the second 30, wall-sit during the 3rd segment, and rest during the last. It makes sure you brush your teeth long enough, too!

Fits in a little thigh, quad, glute and core work while you are doing a necessary task that is easy to double-task with (ie, brushing your teeth)
When you keep doing what you've been doing to lose weight, your metabolism adjusts so that it doesn't need to work so hard to maintain your weight.
That's PLATEAU TIME.
I didn't believe it, but I broke my plateau by eating more, then eating less, then eating within my range.
I also tried eating more carbs, then less carbs; more protein, then less protein; increasing my good fats, lowering my good fats; drinking more water, then less water, and changing my workout routine.
One week,

I did nothing but swim and jog in the shallow end of the pool. Holy cow, did that bust my buns! I dropped 2 pounds that week.
Now, I make it a routine to change my routine every 2-3 weeks and I haven't had a plateau since.
