"D" For Defense - Take Vit D To Combat The Flu!

Members Were Sparked
This Sparked Me! advises that a study carried out over the Fall and Winter of 2009-2010 revealed that those that took Vitamin D supplements and thus had higher levels of D in their systems were half as likely to catch the flu bug or any other viral infection of the respiratory tract. And if any in the high-D group did get sick, they were out of commission for fewer days than those who had lower Vitamin D levels in their systems.

Researchers weren't sure why D helps, but it could be that the nutrient's inflammation-suppressing powers help reduce the severity of infections. And of course it helps to live a healthy lifestyle and wash hands frequently.

When I was practicing as a nurse practitioner, 91% of my tested patients were deficient in Vitamin D so it is very common. I personally take almost 5,000 units of Vitamin D and rarely get sick. I was exposed to flu and swine flu last fall and didn't get either one (didn't get a flu shot either).

Now you tell me!!! I have a really bad cold! I do have some Vit D supplements for the darker months to come, but I thought Vit C was the supplement pushed to prevent colds.
