I found that no matter how focussed I was on my eating my blood glucose levels were too high. Once I started eating a vegetarian diet I saw dramatic decreases over the next few weeks. Once I began eating a vegan diet even more dramatic results occurred. An added bonus was the excellent weight loss without even needing to change exercise levels as well.

My husband and I have made it a point to eat vegetarian for at least one day each week (Tuesdays at our house). We used to think about eating vegetarian more often for the health benefits, but this gives us a way to remember to do it.
I got this book from the library and it has some really wonderful-sounding recipes. I am not a diabetic, but the healthy guidelines apply to everyone. There are many plant-based recipes for vegetarians like me.
