Secrets of Success

Use Google Voice And Cut Your Phone Bill

My home phone service has been free for over two years. I use Google Voice and a simple device called an ATA (available from Linksys or many other companies). Setup is a bit involved but any college student today can help if you're not up to the task. Once you have your Google number it will ring all the phones in your home or any mix of land and cellular phones based on the caller, and you'll have call forwarding, call screening, voice mail, and many other options all for free.

Your voice mails will be transcribed and emailed to you automatically as well if you wish.

  • Its a great thing, and I have Google Voice as a second number (though I rarely use it) but it' It's important to know what you're getting into before you decide. Google Voice isn't planned to be free permanently, and that Google has not yet announced how much the service will cost. Shortly after it came out, it was announced that the service would be free for one year from its inception.. That year has either passed or will be up soon. Also, 911 service works differently than it does with a landline, if that's an issue for you. - by THISYEARSMODEL
I pretty much do the same with yahoo messenger. It does cost 2.99 a month and I buy call cards that last forever. Calling in is completely free. They do not offer Google here yet. - by MYRTLEBEACHWINS
