Today I skipped the the Extra Lean ground beef (cost: over $5/lb) and purchased a lean Round Roast (cost: under $2/lb) which the store then cut off the visible fat and ground for me, for free.

When you brown ground beef... don't just strain it. Rinse it. You keep the flavor and save fat & calories. This tip is especially useful when yuo compare super lean ground beef to regular ground beef. A 4-ounce raw portion of regular hamburger that has been cooked, drained and rinsed has approximately 155 calories, 9g fat, 4g saturated fat and 46 mg cholesterol according to my research.
