I check out books on CD at my local library and listen on an inexpensive portable CD player while I walk . Losing yourself in a book means losing track of time and I easily double or triple what I had planned! emoticon

More Information:

CD players can be found for around $20.

  • I try to read on the exercise bike, forget it. There is no way, I can hold the book steady and read. On the treadmill, I have to put my head so far forward to read, there's no way, I can do that either. Listening sounds just perfect. emoticon so much. - by LESLIE56
  • I do the same by downloading books on my phone or mp3 player. Not only does time go quickly, but I look forward to the next part of the book and it gets me out walking. It is good to choose a reader with energy, though, so you keep up your pace! - by AEHEGE
  • I have doing this for a few years now. I just have to make sure I get a book that has a great reader so my pace doesn't slow down. - by ANGIEINTRAINING
  • I record my class lecture's and listen to them while I walk, should never stop reading completley but I sure do remember more this way. - by GISELE86
  • I listen to books on tape while browsing the internet, doing crafts, cooking, but never thought to take it on the road. Wow. This is great. - by GRALAN
  • the original treadmill i walked on hand a place that held a book/magazine so you could read...someone broke this machine so now...no more reading and walkng. music/tv is now my workout (walking) partner. - by PROPMAN1

  • I download books from the library to my IPOD and listen to adventure or mystery stories every morning on my 40 minute walk/jog. I look forward to it every day cause I get engrossed in my "book". Doesn't cost me a thing, either, just a little time going online to get the "book". I use books on CD during my commute, but for a different reason. When traffic is bad I don't mind cause I am into my book. No more road rage! - by DSHONEYC

  • That's a great idea as long as people don't get so lost in the book they can't be aware of their surroundings when walking outside. - by 1LAZYCOOK
  • VAINVT
I do this while I walk and sometimes while I work in the garden or clean the house. These are the only times I let myself listen to the book, so it becomes a 'treat'. - by VAINVT

  • I've tried reading while on the treadmill and it just doesn't work for me. I like listening to the radio (especially sports broadcasts) while walking outside, but I don't often do that because I want to be aware of my surroundings -- especially traffic when I need to cross streets. - by SHOYER
  • My Nook comes in really handy for this. - by JILLWABLE
