I check out books on CD at my local library and listen on an inexpensive portable CD player while I walk . Losing yourself in a book means losing track of time and I easily double or triple what I had planned!
MORE INFORMATION:
CD players can be found for around $20.

I try to read on the exercise bike, forget it. There is no way, I can hold the book steady and read. On the treadmill, I have to put my head so far forward to read, there's no way, I can do that either. Listening sounds just perfect. so much.

I do the same by downloading books on my phone or mp3 player. Not only does time go quickly, but I look forward to the next part of the book and it gets me out walking. It is good to choose a reader with energy, though, so you keep up your pace!

I have doing this for a few years now. I just have to make sure I get a book that has a great reader so my pace doesn't slow down.

I record my class lecture's and listen to them while I walk, should never stop reading completley but I sure do remember more this way.

Great idea! you can probably get more books done this way than just reading. I like Ginger89's comment about class lectures since i am in college now.

This is a great idea, I think I might buy my mom a portable cd player and then choose books for her at the library. What a great way to help someone with cataracts and other reading problems. Thanks for giving me a creative wat to help her manage the changes of aging!
WALKSINLIGHT4/4/2012 11:45:00 AM
love it ! even my music is getting a bit boring so a book would be a great way to fill that exercise time - thanks !
MIKEYCO4/4/2012 11:34:00 AM
As others have mentioned you can download to you phone or MP3 player. However, if you don't have either of these things check with your local library. Mine offers books on their own MP3 player.

Audio books sounds great.

I've tried reading while on the treadmill and it just doesn't work for me. I like listening to the radio (especially sports broadcasts) while walking outside, but I don't often do that because I want to be aware of my surroundings -- especially traffic when I need to cross streets.
JILLWABLE4/4/2012 8:48:00 AM
My Nook comes in really handy for this.

I do the same thing. I love it...but then again, I listed to audiobooks on my iPod when I clean, driving into & home the office. I'm addicted, so it's good that borrowing the books is free!

Kindle works for me along with audio books or sometimes it's Text-To-Speech function - pretty neat! I've lost 20 pounds by walking + tracking my food on SparkPeople <3 Have a lovely day, everyone! ;)

I just check out a really neat player from the library all I had to add was a battery and my head phones. It really is nice to walk and listen.
