Get a month-at-a-glance planner (or print out a 7x5 grid) and write down your bill payment dates, paydays, and other income and expense streams. Looking at the whole month as a picture will help you better manage your surplus income.

I set up a Gmail account that is only for our bills.I keep track of everything there. All my bills go there and are not lost in all my other email. I made folders for each bill and folders for things to pay in the next 15 days and the next 30 days. Once I get confirmation that the bill is paid, I put it in the correct folder. One of the best things I've done to keep on track.
I bought a folder box that has different tabs (such as "bills", "insurance", "receipts", "taxes", etc.), and I organize all of the documents I need to keep for the year into this folder. At the end of the year, I sort through the files, shredding what I no longer need. Then I file the rest of the items into a larger, long term file box. It keeps me organized, and I can always find what I need.
You can find file folders at office stores, such as Staples and Office Depot. Or your average supercenter such as Walmart of Target carries them.
I have found this method to work for saving money: get envelopes and label them with your bills you pay monthly (ie mortgage, light bill, water bill, etc.) and label one envelope Miscellaneous. Each month put the amount you owe on the bill plus $10 in the envelope. Pay the miscellaneous envelope $20. Once you pay all your bills, move the money from the other envelopes to the miscellaneous envelope and watch your money build up!
