Start with a big jar with a slot, lid securely taped shut labeled with what ever goal you choose. Think of how you could save money: Cut out drinks or dinners out, cans of pop not drunk, etc. and place the money saved in the jar. clear change from wallet daily and add to jar.
Shoot for at least a dollar a day! Seeing the money accumulate will have you wanting to save more. I keep track of each donation and always figure twice as much money to save as what I want to buy. I put the extra half in the bank for emergencies.

Recently I started a savings jar. For every mile I run, I put in a dollar. I have been told it is important to buy running sneakers every 5 months. Mine cost approx. $100. When it comes time to buy my new sneakers, I will be able to purchase them in cash!
We kept a coin jar, but we'd roll coins and exchange it for cash immediately then spend it; no savings there. Now we wait to roll until the jar is at least 3/4 full, and it has to go in our savings account. Seeing a large amount helps us stay motivated.
