Trick Yourself Into Exercising

I am gullible and sometimes immature when it comes to telling myself I have to do things. So I made a rule: when it is time to exercise I have to put on my workout shoes. When I say "I don't want to" I start the self talk. "You know the rule!" "But I'm not going to exercise" I grumble....

And I answer "tell me why not,while you step outside" I give myself to the end of the driveway to give my excuses, then tell myself "I am going to remind you of why you want to do this while we walk to the stop sign." Half way round the block I realize I have completed 10 minutes walking!

    So funny...I do this to. I say..I'll just get on that elliptical for 10 minutes, or, today I'll just go real slowly. Then, after ten minutes I'm always ready to go full boar and make it a great workout. Funny the games we have to play with our head! emoticon

    This made me laugh. I have used this trick forever for housecleaning of various types but I don't usually use it for exercise. I'm going to have to do that cuz it always works! Or at least usually, and if I ONLY do a small amount it's better than sitting around!

    I had a similar trick. My WII is hooked up in the basement and when I would get up early in the morning and NOT wanting to exercise, I would tell myself, "Just go down and do JUST the body test......that's ALL!" Of course, once I was down there, I did a minimum of 30 minutes. I forgot my trick after Christmas........and I haven't been exercising. Thanks for the reminder. I'll have to get to it once again.

    self talk can be positive or negative....or tricky.....I do it all....lol....but I am trying to stay away from negative self talk...its very defeating and unproductive...

I like that others have this issue though.....makes it a little less nutty...

    That little devil voice in my head is my downfall every time when exercise is at stake. I can talk myself out of exercise at lightning speed. I am going to try this "putting my shoes on" strategy. I think it will work for me. Thanks for sharing!

    I wish it were that simple. I have a bad back that doesn't make exercising easy despite all the self-talk in the world. I am suppose to have back surgery in April. Then after 2 weeks my doctor told me I am to start an exercise program.
