Stretch Vs. Strengthen Basics




When targeting a specific muscle for fitness there are two key guidelines for how to stretch or strengthen:

Stretch - perform the opposite action of that particular muscle

Strengthen - perform the movement of the muscle against resistance

More Information:

Ex. Gastrocnemius (calf)

Action - plantar flexion (pointing toes to floor or standing on balls of feet)

Strengthen - perform action above with added body weight such as a backpack filled with something

Stretch - raise toes and front of foot off the floor to sky

*Note: keep knee straight
