I work in Fulfillment (shipping/mailing). When I've forgotten to weigh out a measured portion of something at home in advance - like pretzels or buffalo jerky - sometimes I bring the whole bag to work and use the digital postal scale in the back to measure out the correct portion!
A postal scale is needed - digital is better.

My best purchase (after the athletic shoes) was a gram/ounce scale I found at Bed Bath and Beyond. I weigh foods now and can stop guessing at portion sizes. Get out those measuring cups too! When you're really hungry, it's easy to guess wrong.
I find weighing in once each week gives me a good look at my progress (good or bad) and helps me stay on track. If I really am putting in the needed work, I will see that reflected on the scale most weeks.
Weighing in daily can be discouraging, as you won't see it go down each day, and food/water may show an initial gain on the scale. I weigh in each Thursday in the morning, after I've gone to the bathroom and before I've had any food or drinks.
I have found that weighing in weekly on Wednesday works good for me. In the past I always weighed in on Fridays and that lead to weekend binges. Monday weigh ins didn't work so well because of occasional straying on weekends. Wednesdays work well, it all averages out anyway but I recomend trying the Wednesday weigh in.
