Several times a year I go through our pantry and read all of the dates on everything in the pantry. I pull out everything that has a date that will expire soon. If our family really likes the item, I make plans to serve it immediately in a healthy dish, otherwise we donate it to the local food bank.
MORE INFORMATION:
I also get rid of anything that has been sitting opened for any length of time and recycle the packaging that it was in; making a mental note not to buy it again. I try not to throw good food away when there are people out there who are hungry. If it's unopened and not expired, we donate!

I use a label maker to keep everything organized; it's worked in my kitchen, my office, craft room, storage space, and bathroom. Just seeing the labels reminds me that everything has a correct place, and makes me want to keep things neat and tidy! It especially helps to keep food fresh.
MORE INFORMATION:
I use a label maker to label all of the shelves and containers in my pantry. I label all cereal and bread with a purchase date and label all leftovers with the name, date cooked, and a "toss date". I put numbers on fresh food in the order I buy it so I can use the oldest food first.
I started with my pantry. 1. Took everything out of pantry 2. Threw out all out-dated food items 3. Put items I never use and never would use in giveaway box. 4. Painted pantry shelves white (makes items easy to see) 5. Put items I use the often in the most handy place. 6. Put rest of items in place. Nothing like a clean pantry. Much easier to find what I needed.306
