  • I cook with a lot of dried beans, which always require the long soak before cooking. Last week, I read a blog about doing dried beans in a slow cooker with no pre-soaking and gave it a try. You just put the beans in the cooker, add enough water to cover by a couple of inches. Cook on high for 3 hours. Cookers vary so start checking them at 2-1/2 hours and keep them going until the beans are tender.

I put a couple of cloves of whole garlic in with the beans to flavor them. They were delicious and perfectly cooked! Better than any method I've tried. And so easy. Just remember if you are new to cooking dried beans.... never add salt. Salt makes the beans tough. Wait until they are fully cooked before adding salt. - by M4444W
  • Buy an automatic timer for a few dollars at the store and that way even if your schedule doesn't allow you to be home at the exact beginning and ending time for your dish, the automatic timer will turn the slow cooker on/off for you so you don't have over- or under-cooked food! - by ANMRUNNER
  • During the summer months I use my slow cooker outdoors so it does not heat the kitchen when used over night. Since I spend so much time in the garden anyway I just go to the garage to check it if needed. no need to remove garden shoes.
Garage smells great on arriving home but its not all over the house either. Pat in Maine. - by NORASPAT
  • Definitely love my slow cooker, I also like the idea of getting an automatic timer I never thought about that, thanks for the idea, ARUNNER. What's really awesome, is you don't have to use oils, or butter, just seasoning, whatever is in there besides adding a little bit of water, or chicken, or beef broth, it all makes it's own juice. I also don't defrost anything if I'm making it in the crock pot, I make sure I wash, and trim, whatever meat it is before I freeze it, and than I just put it right in there frozen, it always comes out perfect. - by TONISSS48
  • I use my slow cooker for all kinds of things. Always looking for new recipes to use. Today I make a chicken pot pie for my for my extended family, it is one of their favorites. I cook the filling in the crock pot while I am in church. Then add cook the crust when I get home. It saves so much time. - by SHANJHENDERSON

  • Great tip, ARunner!
I love my slow cooker -- I actually own two: one big and one small. I use at least one of them once or twice a week or more.
Slow cookers are a great way to save money. I use the big SC to make huge batches and freeze some to eat on nights when we don't have a lot of time. This has cut down our eating out budget considerably. I also find you can use a SC to make cheap cuts of meat delicious and tender and to get the most out of cheaper veggies, like root veggies, or to use up whatever might go bad in your fridge if you don't eat it soon! - by STRAY_CAT

  • Hi,

I'm relatively new to slow cooking--so what are some of your favorite recipes? I'm looking for both meat and especially vegetarian--as I'm trying to eat less meat.

    thanks! - by TOONCES5
  • I love my slow cooker. wonderful investment and you can make so much stuff in it. We actually bought a cookbook called the slow cooker bible. There are recipes from appetizers sides main dishes soups and even desserts! They also make these bags you can buy in the ziploc bag section that you put in the slow cooker and makes for no mess clean up just pull out the bag and throw it away they fit all slow cookers. I know that is the worst part of using it is the clean up after especially if you are using it regularly - by MGNWD22
  • I made a great curry in mine last week. I started with minced (ground) turkey and chick peas.Over the week it became cooked chicken and egg, and mixed veg, with more chick peas. I dont think Ive ever managed to extend a use for so long, and enjoyed it so much. Each day it was heated right through, so the food was quite safe to eat, and so so tasty. emoticon - by DOTTYDRUID
  • I like using the slow cooker; however, I don't normally use it for beans. there is some disgreement as to whether the lower heat breaks down the enzymes sufficiently for you to 1)benefit from all nutrients and 2)not be more prone to causing gas.

Just thought I'd mention it. Since there is disagreement, make your own decision. - by LINJHA
  • I made barbequed pork ribs in my slow cooker...the meat was so tender! It just fell off the bone! Hubby gave lots of compliments! emoticon - by EVER-EVOLVING
