I actually keep a paper recycling basket right by my front door. All junk mail, menus, etc don't make it past the foyer. And it is in a convenient spot for me to drop read magazines and take out when I am walking doggie :)

In my area, nearly every school, church & library has an outdoor paper recycling bin---that helps raise money for the organization. I open all the junk mail. Then I put things into three piles. One to shred ---anything with even my name or address ---and this goes on top of the shredder (to shred about 1X/wk.). The next is for things that can't be recycled ---something plastic or metal ---for the trash can. The last is to recycle & goes into a box which we take to the local school every few weeks.

Better yet keep a shredder in the garage and shred and recycle

There is a way to opt out of junk mail by federal regulations. I'm not sure what it is. With a little sleuthing, the info can be found. It's such a pain!

I agree with the shredder idea. NOTHING leaves this house with any form of ID attached to it. My cross shredder will shred up to 12 sheets of paper, so entire envelopes can go through without me even opening them. Line the basket with a trash can liner and when it's full just cinch it up and throw it out. Our recycle doesn't take window envelopes though so it all goes into the trash, but the volume after being cross shred is (I think) much less.

A shredder is the real fool proof way to keep an identity thief at bay. Burning things is good, but sometimes if not burned completely down to ashes, things can still be read. One just can't be to careful!

I have a RED trash can that all junk mail goes into. Everything in this can gets BURNED! This way it does not clutter up the house, and it is destroyed so that no one else can use my name to open credit cards, order products, etc... Unfortunately there are a lot of Identity thieves out there so please be careful!

I started doing this awhile ago. If I don't, all the junk mail ends up a foot deep on my kitchen table. Not good!!
