I use a beautiful small plate for my meals and small utensils..example my favorite utensil is a demitasse sterling silver spoon. then I chew every bite 20 plus times. The whole process is much slower and I know when I get full as opposed to shoveling it in.

I also have made some changes, and filled smaller dishes with food, and it works. I still have to work on eating slower, as I like to eat my food hot....anyway....still trying!

I do this too! (The small plate and utensils, not the chewing 20 times). It really slows down the eating and gives your brain a chance to catch on that you've had enough to eat.

SHRINK IT!
I shrink all my eating utensils...I use a salad plate rather than a dinner plate whenever I can. And at home (I haven't quite the courage to do this out yet), I eat with a silver (yes, I'm worth it...but they had been my children's) baby spoon & fork. My salad plate looks so full & I'm forced to slow way down with the small utensils. I also use a beautiful hand blown wine glass for beverages. Elegant and useful in keeping portions at bay.
In addition to the secret below by PEACHES about using smaller plates, use smaller utensils too. A childs fork and spoon will make that smaller portion (which looks larger on the small plate) last longer.
Sounds silly, I know, but I really do use smaller plates and utensils to eat. Slows me down..and makes it look like I'm getting bigger bites and more food! Hubby always uses a dinner plate, I use a luncheon sized plates. I use salad forks and small teaspoons for everything.

Funny - I actually LIKE using the little plastic spoons you get in take out places when they are small like I like. I even use them at home sometimes.
