Store Natural Peanut Butter Upside Down--Then Stir & Refrigerate

Natural peanut butter doesn't contain added oils, but it does require regular stirring, especially when you first buy it. That can be messy and difficult. So each time I buy a new jar, I store it in my pantry upside down until I'm ready to use it. That mixes the oil better for easier stirring!

More Information:

When you finally open the jar, use a butter knife to stir the oil throughout the jar until it's well mixed. Then store your mixed peanut butter in the fridge and the oils will not separate!

  • That's what we've been doing for some time now - it works great! Added bonus: the kids have an easier time getting the peanut butter off the inside of the lid than from deep inside the jar, so they'll actually spread their own without getting peanut butter all over their hands! - by WESTCOASTGIRL2

I do that as well but another trick is to warm the peanut butter just a little in the microwave; makes it much easier to stir. - by GIANT-STEPS

  • emmainteresting, natural peanut butter has nothing in it but peanuts. jif, skippy, etc aren't natural because they have added salt, sugar, and oil. therefore, they aren't truly natural peanut butter. I prefer the Krema brand, or Trader Joe's. - by VK2ZT14

I just got some natural P.B.. and was about to just toss it.. hope this works. I love p.b. &j sandwiches, but too much Na in normal P.B. - by RUSSELL_40
  • OK - not to sound like I have orthorexia nervosa or anything but - I see many people here posting that there is "natural" Jif, Skippy etc that don't require stirring. Please read the label - and if you are ok with those ingredients that's ok - just don't think it's the same as what used-to-be-called natural. I get Peanut Butter that has one ingredient - peanuts! Jif and Skippy have added saturated oils to "thicken" the pb - and both I think have some disguised sugar in there. I usually pour off most of the oil in the Trader Joe/Adams versions anyway, but I know for kids that is usually too dry, so the tips about upside down really work. I also keep it in the fridge even before I pop it open since there's nothing to stop oxidation. But also, I put the jar on top of a small plate - if that oil leaks out it's a big mess in the fridge :) - by EMMAINTERESTING
  • I have been buying natural peanut butter for a year now and never thought to do this even though the first time stirring is always such a pain! Thanks! - by MELHAYWIRE
  • And I thought nobody did this except me :) I have been eating natural, no-salt, peanut butter for a long time, and now the other stuff tastes too sweet and salty and almost artificial. It's gratifying that with time, you can truly lose your taste for stuff that is bad for you. Hard to believe, but it's true. - by RIBKNIT

  • This is perfect. I'll put mine upside down, then on it's side - more than once if I'm not opening it for a few days. I grew up eating Adams peanut butter, so stirring was the labor intensive part. - by _MAOMAO_

This tip works especially well if you buy the larger size of natural peanut butter. It is sometimes hard to reach the bottom to stir it. emoticon - by 1BAMBI1
