I could see how a lot of us could get like that with just the right circumstances. I can tell when my mind is cluttered. I look around and everything is cluttered, my car, my house, then I know it must be me inside too... so that's when I clean up. So far I manage to catch myself but given just the right set of circumstances..... it could be me on that show.

That show has helped me, too. I added a Sparkstreak goal to daily work on clearing out my main hoard: books.

I watch this, too...it really gives me motivation, even though my house isn't overwhelming like theirs are!
ZELZEN7/20/2010 2:08:00 AM
Yes, that show has inspired me, too! I cleaned out my entire closet after watching it. And my husband began cleaning out the living room! We aren't that messy to begin with, but it was a good kick in the rear to clean up a bit more.

As people said it is a very sad show. The most depressing is when they recently did a "Where are they now?" episode and the ones that didn't continue with psychiatric care were right back where they were a year ago. it does encourage me to go through things and make some tough decisions.
YOGAGIRLNH6/16/2010 10:14:00 PM
My parents are hoarders--not as bad as most of the people on those shows. After every visit, I come home and clean.
LISSIE886/16/2010 10:01:00 AM
My MIL is a hoarder and my DH has tendencies to let things build up. It drives me nuts, but my husband has no trouble with it. UGH!
2ABETRLIFE6/14/2010 2:26:00 PM
I used to watch that, but I decided I was watching too much and doing too little. This isn't just clutter on these programs, some of these people have psychiatric problems; this hoarding is more than just having too many shoes, tupperware, or too much paper. If anything, I hope shows like this encourage people with these problems to seek help. They CAN have, and DO deserve, a better life.

I feel the same way! My mother was a hoarder and when ever I have something I no longer need I find someone that can use it! Sometimes I get rid of things too quickly... I guess that is better than living in clutter. At least for me!
KCSLADY6/13/2010 8:53:00 PM
I watch it every now and again too! Reminds me that stuff is just stuff and can't make new memories if we hold onto the objects from our old memories.
My mom says "If you want to remember it so much but you don't use it just take a picture!"
KSHENELL316/13/2010 2:04:00 PM
I had to laugh because I did the same thing a few months ago and continue to clean out stuff. I have a yard sale planned for this weekend (hopefully) and I'm waiting to finish this quarter classes this week to tackle the collection of paper I have in my home office, that seems to be my weakness as well as shoes, pocketbooks. SHANLERA61 that a good ideal to add it into my streaks, I so love putting daily check in those boxes.

I feel so much better when my "piles" are gone from desk, chairs & table...hoarders is definitely agreat motivation

When my house is neat I feel better emotionally and physically.
HIKERJOHNSON6/11/2010 8:04:00 AM
I believe that many of us have hoarding tendencies but I am also compulsively neat. Watching programs about hoarding makes me sad because I see people that are desparate for help. It also makes me take a harder look at myself and see how my quirks affect me.
TYGRLILY6/11/2010 7:16:00 AM
I've watched that, but another show that serves the same purpose - I watch "Clean House" on style! What a great show! Really inspires you to put on your big girl panties and get to getting! toss all that mayhem and foolishness!!! ;)
DWHITTYONE6/10/2010 9:34:00 PM
Me too.
MOM2ACAT6/10/2010 6:18:00 PM
I always have the urge to clean after I watch that show, lol
IMESASSY6/10/2010 6:13:00 PM
Me too. I could never live like that!

Organizing chaosand the paper monster
I live in a split level house so there are many stairs. I also want to organize my stuff. I try to spend 30 minutes decluttering and moving stuff from the attic to the basement. I am moving swiftly. I then load the car and deliver my unwanted, but good stuff to various agencies. Plenty of lifting, movement, and exercise. 435312

This is not taking the place of a workout, training or class, but gives me more burned calories and movement. 323
Decluttering When You Have Too Much: Keep The Best 10%
I've been decluttering alot, & have come to realize at the end of the day, after you get rid of trash, & undesirables, & then move up to "good but I just don't have room for this", or I just don't like it as much as the others, or, it doesn't fit", what you are left with are things you love but YOU STILL HAVE TOO MUCH. I would not have been able to see this, much less agree with it in the beginning of the process; but basically I am paring down to keeping only the best of the VERY best. (cont'd)
MORE INFORMATION:
Everyone's % will be diff, but for me with limited space I am only keeping ~10%. Only now do I see this at the end of the day; at the very end of the process. Oh, the hours of agony I could have saved myself, & precious time, if I had known from the beginning the goal was to keep the best 10%.
Too often you focus on cleaning and decluttering your house. I challenge you to start with your bedroom. I didn't but now that I see the results I wish I would have. Sleep and relaxation in a clean clutter free bedroom in definitely increased. Then your day will be much more productive.
