Cutting portion in half is a great idea.........I'll start doing this. I do often when I know I'm going out to eat I check nutritional facts prior to going..........especially if I know ahead of time

I started doing this this summer when family came to visit. We always eat out when my parents are here. It really helps!

To expand, If you can get nutrition facts ahead of time, you can plan which meal and size to buy. I often eat a little more than half at the restaurant for dinner and a little less than half for lunch.

Surprise yourself with calorie savings
By tracking food ahead of time and at least including "place holder" snacks, sometimes I surprise myself with a calorie savings by not eating something planned. Last night I used my savings for dessert and still used less calories I would have had I eaten the planned snack.
You can do anything for 21 days. If you avoid all sugar and sweeteners for 21 days, you'll be surprised how your tastes will change. After 21 days you won't want all that sugar anymore, it will be WAY too sweet! And at 15 calories per teaspoon, that's a lot of calories saved in those 21 days, too. :)
