If you have a problem with ants in your house, mix equal portions borax and sugar, add enough water to make a thin paste. Place the bait in shallow containers (I use jar lids) and set them out where the ants frequent. Usually a couple of days later the ants are gone.
Borax can be found in the laundry products aisle. Though this bait is nontoxic, it can cause an upset stomach for pets and children (think of eating soap) so it is still wise to place the bait out of reach of pets & children.

Mix water and vinegar in a spray bottle. Spray doors and windows. Any area you suspect ants are coming in. This will stop them in their tracks.. literally! Ants leave a scent behind so they know where they came in and out. The vinegar eliminates the scent and spraying once a week eliminates the ants!
if you have ants, puff some talc based powder where you see them entering from. The composition in Talc is too large for the ants and they will not cross it. You can puff around all your baseboards, windows, etc. to protect the whole house.
Kid and pet friendly, plus it smells nice :) You may need to repeat if you treat one area and ants find a new way in.
