Never thought I could, Never lose sight of the thought YOU CAN DO IT!

I had an illness many years ago which left me basically with incredible muscle fatigue. I gained a lot of weight (lost, gained, lost, gained). Over the past few years I have been able to get myself on track by FINDING MY FOCUS. What do I really want? I want to be healthier, stronger, feel better. I think the last one *to feel better* was the key. The more I focus on THAT thought, the more motivated I seem to become. It isn't easy when you have 'pounds' to lose in the seemingly uphill battle.

Don't stress over the amount, be happy you did it!

I honestly FEEL good when I exercise consistently. But that doesn't mean I do 20 miles per day, if I get in exercise 3x/week on a week I'm not feeling too great then to me that's a success. If I exercise only 5 or 10 minutes a day for a week, that's a success to me too. The point is, I EXERCISED.

Stretching after Exercise

After my regular cardio/strength training workout, I unwind with about 10 minutes of yoga. I start with a few sun salutations to keep my heart rate going then steadily decrease intensity until I'm fully relaxed.

Find an Exercise Class with a No-Show Fee

If you have struggled like me to find an exercise routine that you enjoy and keeps you motivated everyday, sign up with a yoga, pilates or other exercise studio that charges you if you don't come to your class. Many gyms or studios have online class sign ups and if you cancel less than 8-12 hours in advance, you have to pay a fee. Saving money is another reason to get up and go at 6am when hitting the snooze button could end your fitness streak!

Hot Yoga

Hot Yoga gets your heart rate up, while increasing your flexibility, and peace of mind. It's great for burning calories. I'm always floating afterward. Many studios have a karma class for a reduced fee that goes to charity, and many studios also let you trade cleaning duties for classes. emoticon

Exercise while brushing my teeth!?

Since starting to take yoga once a week I notice I am using "chair pose" while brushing my teeth in the morning & evening. I tighten my core and hold my body in position for 2 minutes while keeping my teeth clean! emoticon

Every day is a new chance to succeed

Even if I totally blow my calories on one day, I treat the next day as a new chance to succeed. This is an approach yoga has taught me...each new day is a gift, a new opportunity to be my best.

Stay in the Moment

It's always been hard for me to come back from a slip up. With a little bit of yoga breathing, I've learned to let go of the disappointment and not turn to emotional eating. Yoga has always taught me to focus on my breath as a way of "staying in the moment." When I feel some emotional eating creeping up on me, I focus on my breathing, closing my eyes (wherever I am) and listening to the slow in and out of my breath. Besides calming me down, it reminds me to stay focused on the moment!

Keep Yoga Mat Germs at Bay with This Simple Folding Trick

Most people roll up their yoga mats after class, but that transfers germs from the underside (floor) to the top side that you stand and lie on--ew! Use this trick to properly fold your yoga mat and keep the top side away from the germy underside.

Visualization

Every morning, before I get out of bed, I sit in a quiet yoga pose for 15 minutes and visualize my day. I congratulate myself on yesterday's successes, forgive the slips and commit to my plan today. I see myself preparing breakfast and packing my lunch. I breathe deeply and get calm. emoticon

DO IT YOGA STYLE

This past week I had lower back troubles with pain
radiating down both legs down onto my feet. Never
in my life did I ever feel pain like this. I did research
and I am not a big fan of medicine, so I turned my complete
attention to Yoga and the different poses that target
pain in the body.

Yoga to sleep well

Although I cannot physically do a lot of yoga, I do what I can, and I try to do some at night a few hours before bed. I practice deep breathing, warrior, and just a few others. It helps me to de-stress, and relax, and align my spine.

duncan wong's "yogic arts"

i found this set of ashtanga dvds to be a great foundation for beginning my martial arts practice. you can work up a sweat (especially with the more advanced dvd of the two) while practicing vinyasa, kicking, and core strength.

Don't Underestimate the Power of Yoga!

This "secret" will probably throw some people off because I'm NOT referring to ashtunga yoga;just plain old limber-yourself-up yoga.It surprisingly not only gets your body more flexible,{IMPORTANT IN OUR AGING YRS!}, but it BURNS 212 cal. an hour and relaxes the mind through breathing exercises.

yoga first thing in the morning

I have found that doing a yoga DVD first thing in the morning gets me energized and feeling great for the day ahead. When I come home from work I actually WANT to take a walk instead of being exhausted.

Variety in Exercise to Work on the Mind as Well as the Body

I find that different exercises do different things to my mental state ... if I go to a vigorous vinyasa yoga class or at home, that humbles me and brings me down a peg or two, walking restores my confidence, and pilates-like exercise balances these two opposing trends ... ☺ emoticon

CONSISTENCY

Some days, its hard to be motivated about exercising. On those days, I always think how much closer to my goal I will be with a minimum of 30 minutes cardio. Afterward, I feel so good physically, mentally and emotionally. Watching my body change for the better is SUPER REWARDING!
