Commercial Intervals

emoticon When you are using a Treadmill or Stationary Bike that has a Television on it, every time your Program goes to Commercial, increase your pace to the fastest you can do for a Minute or Two during the Commercial Break.

I take Criticism as Motivation

Every time my husband, close family members or friends criticise my fat gain, I do not get disappointed; instead, their comment increases my willpower. I take it as a challenge and run 15 minutes extra on the treadmill. I have been able to increase my stamina and strength for the workouts this way.

Use a virtual treadmill app and listen to Pandora

I found a couple great apps for ipad that show great trails for running or biking or hiking as you work on the treadmill or stationary bike. And while I'm "running on the trail" I can listen to all my favorite music on Pandora. I want to get in my exercise!

Cover Up

When I am running/walking on the treadmill, I cover up the screen so I can't see how much time I have left. I start getting tired earlier on when I can see the time, but when I can't see it, I feel great the whole time I'm on the treadmill.

Lure Yourself onto the Treadmill

I like to read while I walk on the treadmill. If I have a book I'm really enjoying, I save it specifically for treadmill time and don't let myself read it anywhere else. Some days I can hardly wait to start walking! emoticon

Beat Treadmill Boredom by Streaming Weight Loss Shows at the Gym!

I get super bored on the treadmill, so I've started to stream "The Biggest Loser" on my iPhone, through Hulu. Not only does it give me something to focus on, but I get the added benefit of positive coaching from the trainers on the show. I figure, if those people can work out for 8 hours a day, I can knock out 30 minutes on the treadmill.

Start Slow, Gain Momentum

It's a good general lesson, but it even works during one session! I found that if I start out on the treadmill going as my normal/fast pace, I get tired, quit, and don't burn many calories. Try starting off just under normal pace. As you progress, pick up the pace a little at a time. I find I have more energy to actually finish. By the time my workout is finished, I'm going max speed and sometimes I want to keep going (like a freight train)! emoticon

If it's good for you it can't be fun...can it?

I started exercising in October 2010, managing 3 minutes on the treadmill. After a few days it was 5 min, then 10, 15, 25, and then 30! What an accomplishment! As of 610/11 I do 120 min water aerobics, 30 min elliptical, three weight circuits and 15 to 30 minutes on the treadmill! My secret is persistence, believing in myself and that I could do it. Now, I get upset when I can't make it to the gym 7 days a week. To coin a phrase, I do it because I know I'm worth it, and so is my health! emoticon

Treadmill Trick

I'm training to run a 5k this summer by using th 5K Your Way Walk/Jog Program. I use the treadmill and find myself losing steam by the end of the workout. I visualize a dirt path, trees, and water to one side of me (a relaxing setting that looks like the path I will take). It helps to finish the minute of running. :)

Motivation through Texts!

My friends & I motivate each other by text! When one of us is about to exercise we'll text "Getting on my treadmill now, so get off your lazy butt and start running!" It holds us accountable and makes us feel like we have a partner there with us even though we're miles apart. We always push each other to strive for more by gently teasing each other with our texts, like "I'm almost done, get started!" or "Great Job! So proud of you!". It really has helped me and it makes working out fun.

Treadmill backwards!

My chiropractor just gave me an awesome workout for ab muscles that I'd never have thought to try: she told me to set the treadmill to about a 15% incline, get on it facing "the wrong way" (ie, not towards the control panel), and start it moving at a slow speed, increasing gradually, and walk uphill BACKWARDS. This works abs and front-of-body stability muscles. It is SO FUN and really amusing to do while everyone else is using their treadmills the conventional way!

Trick yourself into doing cardio

I use to find it hard to get my 30 mins of cardio in, now I trick myself into not noticing the time. I just catch up on a show that I really get into while on the treadmill and I don't even notice the time goinmg by.

MUSIC!

I have found myself clicking through digital cable and finding music channels to use while on the treadmill! I try to find music that has bpm (beats per minute) that match up best with the speed on the treadmill. Totally motivates me to workout that much harder.

You don't always need a treadmll!

So I have a foot injury, but I didn't want to slow down on the cardio and I hate a treadmill. I did some research and found three different exercises to put together and my heart rate goes up!! It does the job and the best part is, no treadmill!! emoticon

make workouts fun

Find something to help make your workouts fun. Read a book or magazine while on the treadmill or stationary bike, watch a movie while you walk in place, make a mix CD of your favorite heart pumping tunes and dance around your house. Just move and make it fun to keep yourself motivated.

Music and interval training

I am a big believer in interval training on my treadmill. It helps keep me on it longer as less boring and keeps your metabolism stoked. emoticon

When It Hurts - Push Through!

When you're working out doing whatever is your routine, don't stop when it starts to hurt. Even tho your legs are burning, your abs have that knot in it, or you feel like you're about to die on that treadmill - PUSH THRU! That uncomfy feeling is your body changing (for the better!) emoticon

T.V. on the Treadmill

I hate to admit it but I love watching TV on the treadmill. I often extend my workout time to finish watching a program. I also like watching exercise-based programs (Tommy Europe's Last 10 Pounds or Bulging Brides) while I workout. Seeing what a difference ten pounds makes can be quite amazing.

Try Different Treadmill Speeds

If you're having trouble staying on one speed for a long duration of time on a treadmill, try different speeds out different days. I found that 5.2 is too slow for me, but 5.6 wears me out too quickly. 5.4mph is my "magic speed" but it took me weeks to find!

Add Some Randomness to Your Workout

Go random! Most treadmills, ellipticals, and other exercise machines have different programs, like Hills, Fat Burn, etc. Intervals are a fantastic way to torch calories and improve cardiovascular fitness and endurance. Try the Random program to keep your muscles guessing!
