Cravings

If a person says "don't think about this. don't think of that." That is exactly what they think of. I try to make an effort to think about the healthy foods that I want to eat, instead of restricting any kind of food from my diet. For example if I want to eat more oranges, I think on purpose daily of citrus, yummy fruit, and how much I enjoy the particular taste. Suddenly I find myself craving an orange. Our thoughts are very powerful!

Craving Control

I quit smoking a long time ago, and although I still have the desire, it is getting easier to say NO. That has lead me to the secret ... "Manage each craving one at a time". This applies to food as well. Let yourself know what giving in to your craving will mean for your plan, how it got you in this jam already, and what sacrifices you might need to make to compensate for a "quick fix". One craving at a time ... just say no. emoticon

When I want to chew

Sometimes when I need to chew, I just stick a piece of sugar free gum in my mouth and that helps with food cravings. A good one to pick, Dentene Ice.

What's healthy in the Junk Food You are craving after workout?

I've noticed that after a good workout, when I am suddenly "craving" some junk food like ice cream or something cheese-y etc, if I take a moment to think about what is in the food that might be soothed with a healthier substitute. For ice cream, I usually find a small container of Greek yogurt with fruits or some nuts satisfy my craving and give me good nutrients for my muscles after the workout.

Creamy Salad Dressing--with the GOOD fats!

Sometimes creamy salad dressings are just better. But stop myself from reaching for the cesear or ranch dressing I just add a chopped egg and half an avocado, along with a simple balsamic vinaigrette. I put a plate on top of my bowl and shake or toss really well. The egg yolk and avocado add a creamy quality while supplying my body with the good fats and some protein! Yummy.

Put a mirror on the refrigerator

Studies prove that people are more likely to stay on track when "eyes are watching them." A mirror on the refrigerator, and one in the pantry, may subconsiously reduce snacking, sneaking or binging. PLUS, looking at yourself will remind you of your goals and help make that decision on whether you are going to snack or choose another option when you are not truly hungry.
Even better, put your "goal picture" BESIDE the mirror to remind you where you are heading. emoticon

Track EVERYTHING!

Even if it's just a bite or a taste, track everything that goes into your mouth. Better decisions come from accurate information. If you know what you're actually eating, you can evaluate it realistically and make necessary changes.

Pick a "clean the pantry" day

This is a great money-saving move! Pick one day per month (or week) to clean out the pantry/fridge/freezer. Go over what you have and get creative to make something from it. Make soup, casserole, stir fry, whatever you can think of. If you can stretch it to a week, more power to you! It prevents older food from going to waste and saves you from a grocery run for one more day.

Vision Board & GOALS

I "vision collaged" my back of the door mirror, this way I "SEE" it all the time!!! Everyday, sometimes several times a day! Foods, Exercises, Physically fit bodies, places I want to go and things I want to do!! Anything that is something to strive for or look forward to I put it on the edge of that mirror. SO when I do that one last check in the mirror before I sweep out the door I know what I want in LIFE!!! EVerything I want to live for is there: Prayer, Familiy, Friends.Healthy Lifestyle!

Help Food Tracker be more flexible & accurate

Help Food Tracker be more flexible & accurate - enter new favorites in different size servings. For example, my almond milk nutritional info as 1 serving = 1 cup. But what if I like to pour a small splash into coffee? I re-entered (and saved) a new entry using "1 serv = 8 oz" since 1 cup equals 8 oz, right? Then I can guess my splash to be 1 oz or 1/4 oz (or I could resave info with however many Tablespoons per cup.). It would work with metric too.). Makes Life Easier!

Practice telling yourself "No!"

Foods can be addictive, or just strike up cravings that we feel we must indulge on. Practice saying "NO!" and prove to yourself you don't need extra portions or unhealthy foods!

Off the couch, on the floor..

Determined to stay off the couch in the evening after a long day and exercise, I found if I sit on the floor I end up doing all my Calisthenics, yoga poses and stretching, while hanging with hubby and enjoying our tv show.

Stress Management: 4 A's - REMINDER! 4 A's

I am keeping the follwing four A's in mind: Avoid, Alter, Accept and Adapt. Whenever I feel my head is ready to pop from stress i'm going to look at the root cause and determine which one of the 4 A's can be applied.

Switch out your snacks!

I hear people complain about being tempted by their snack food. Here's a flash! No matter where you are in your journey, take a look at your stash of snacks. Purge that stash with healthy goodies. Focus on snack time at twice a day, three times max! Put fruit and veggies into the mix! Get rid of the bad stuff! It's really easy to do and it will become a healthy change to your lifestyle!

Measuring Food

I recently bought a food scale because I was having a hard time knowing what is considered a reasonable portion. I use it pretty much every day! I have found it very helpful because often times, we may think that we're eating the "right" amount of food but are usually over indulging. I use the scale to measure my nuts, fruits, rice/quinoa before eating.

Track my Food One Day beforehand

I find that if I pack my food on the night before I get to work and track my food that night as well, that I am less likely to go over my calories for the day.

I think it helps my mind see the things that I can eat throughout the day and takes the guessing game out of, "What am I going to eat...".

When I don't plan beforehand, I am also less likely to track my food - which often leads me to overeat.

Food is food! And nothing more.

Before i started my healthy lifestyle, i used to treat food as either a friend or an enemy. Its when i learned to approach food as what it really is - nutrition, that i managed to incorporate my new eatinghabits!
