Taste and See!

We know that those who eat slow give their bodies time to realize satiety and eat less. I eat alone a lot and find this a challenge. Here are two ways I slow down:

1. Look at my bite before I put it in my mouth. Realize what it is and looks like. Be grateful for the benefit I am about to receive.

2. Chew for a count of 20-25, noting taste and texture.

I find I eat more slowly and actually enjoy what I am having.

Portion Distortion!

Best thing I ever did was take 'the idea' to use measuring cups to control my portions. 1 Cup for protein 1 cup for starch/carbs and 2 cups for veg (Steamed, grilled, etc.) if it's a salad mixed - 2 cups (Then 1 cup after only if still hungry). This can be very easy and has helped me to curtail my portions down to a THIRD of what I USED to eat!

Portion Control

There are 'portion pots' available on the market. I use standard measuring cups/jug - 1 cup for each 'food group' (protein, carb and 2 cups for veg). Even then I am potentially serving up too much! BUT it's literally 2/3's LESS than what I used to eat. Portions can be difficult. If having trouble - USE a measuring CUP - IF you are still hungry after EATING slowly, just be careful, be aware. The 'portion pots' were silly prices, I already OWNED measuring cups! :)

Boredom eating

I'm horrible for eating because I'm bored, mostly at night. What I do when I get that craving for sweets or my favourite food in the evening is grab a big glass of water, turn on my favourite song and do something! Sometimes I do crunches, stretch or just plain dance like nobody is watching! I get so caught up in what I'm doing that I forgot I wanted food, plus I can feel good about burning a few extra calories :)

Read even the Healthy Food ingredient lists, SNEAKY Food industry!

Be sure to read all packaged food labels. The food industry is sneaky with the chemicals and word replacements. Soy and sugar replacements seem to be in everything!

Even the healthiest “packaged” foods can shock you. READ every label. The food industry can be SNEAKY!!

Vision Board & GOALS

I "vision collaged" my back of the door mirror, this way I "SEE" it all the time!!! Everyday, sometimes several times a day! Foods, Exercises, Physically fit bodies, places I want to go and things I want to do!! Anything that is something to strive for or look forward to I put it on the edge of that mirror. SO when I do that one last check in the mirror before I sweep out the door I know what I want in LIFE!!! EVerything I want to live for is there: Prayer, Familiy, Friends.Healthy Lifestyle!

Serving Size Portions

Whenever I buy a 'snackable' food (carrots, crisps, pretzels, cookies, ect) I immediately repackage it into serving size baggies with the calories written directly on the package. That way everytime I reach for a snack I'm reminded of exactly what I'm eating!

MAKE IT ENJOYABLE!

The real power that drives motivation is the "reward" at the end. So if you are working out and not enjoying it, be aware of that and find an activity that makes you smile and you look forward to. Give yourself little goodies for your hard work.
Search new recipes and find alternatives to your favorite dishes. We don't have to suffer ever! You can still eat food that you love and get exercise from activities you enjoy. Life is good!

Practice telling yourself "No!"

Foods can be addictive, or just strike up cravings that we feel we must indulge on. Practice saying "NO!" and prove to yourself you don't need extra portions or unhealthy foods!

Off the couch, on the floor..

Determined to stay off the couch in the evening after a long day and exercise, I found if I sit on the floor I end up doing all my Calisthenics, yoga poses and stretching, while hanging with hubby and enjoying our tv show.

Review and Tweak the Plan~

Whenever i'm getting off track or even when i'm feeling a little bored I look over my old blogs. Almost all of them give me a more positive perspective or solutions to what I want to tweak or change. Should I not feel more empowered or motivated to a new direction then I hit some of my SP friends blogs.

Size really does matter...

The size of your plate matters. The smaller the plate, the more likely your portion size will be smaller.

The size of each piece of your meal makes the different too. If your piece of chicken is bigger, you will probably eat too much. But if your chicken is smaller, you'll have better portion control.

Positive Outlook on Eating

Never think of yourself as "on a diet" or "restricting what you eat". These are negative ways of looking at eating. Instead you need to see that you are "choosing healthy foods" and "living a healthy lifestyle". Food can be a very positive experience in our lives but we must remember to keep all things in moderation. Just by changing your outlook to a more positive one will help motivate you to keep eating healthy. Food is delicious and can be enjoyed even if you are watching what you eat. emoticon

1/2 that portion...Break
fast,
Lunch, Dinner

Half that portion! I half the portion of whatever i'm about to eat. If it can't be halved without wasting part then I don't eat it Example: Sandwich you can half & save for later...cookie you would have to share if a person is available or throw the half away if you have no one to share it with. IF I would have to waste it then I don't eat it. Planning!

Start with Salad!

Before eating a big meal, start with a small salad (hold the dressing). You'll be fuller faster while eating your meal and comsume far less calories. And it helps you get in your five daily servings of veggies! emoticon

Repetitious eating

Knowing what you are going to eat day to day really helps. I have found that my breakfasts, snacks & lunches tend to be the same variation of a few good-old stand-bys, within a certain caloric/healthful range - and at the same time during each day. It also made it easier to make tracking easier by plugging in those stand-by meals into the "group section" of the nutrition tracker. One click tracking at it's finest!

Want It: Own it

Although you should learn everything possible about nutrition and good eating habits, surely portion control. It boils down to one thing maybe then two. Exercise and controlling your eating. Less in, more out.

It's not a one size fits all, you must do some soul searching and find out what you need food for comfort and not to live. It fine to enjoy the things we do, but they should not be to our detriment The adage less, is more is true.
