is another set of challenges available for FREE.
Begun in the 1960s, it has been available for years.
(Presidential Fitness Award, Physical Fitness Test, Presidential Active Lifestyle Award - PALA, or Presidential Champions)
The Adult Fitness Test measures aerobic fitness, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, & body composition.
PALA goals are 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week for 6 of 8 weeks (or 8,500 daily steps).
Cross train to reduce boredom and repetition injuries
Cross train - have a variety of exercises - in order to keep your routine fresh and motivating. It will also help to break through plateaus.
Triathlon training turned out to be MUCH easier on my joints than just running.
And remember there are several components to fitness - muscle endurance, strength, flexibility, aerobic capacity, balance, reaction time... work to improve in all areas.

I find something that really makes cardio exercise much more enjoyable is to first improve flexibility, then strength, and then increase cardio.

If I can't make my scheduled workout due to life, I go to plan B and do what I can... something is always better than nothing and you can work out literally everywhere... at night at grad school, I ran stairs during my 10 min break-LOL! Stuck in airport? Run laps... who cares what people think?
