Walk Instead of Wait

If you need to go to the pharmacy, ask how long it will take for it to be filled, and then take that time and go walk around the neighborhood instead of waiting. Not only do you get the exercise, but you can walk around a neighborhood you haven't seen much of! A fun way to spice up the walks!

Walking doesn't feel like exercise when I have my IPod on and I'm listening to my favorite music...it's pure pleasure! emoticon

Extra Steps

Look for ways to add extra steps to your day. I live in NYC and therefore don't have a car, but I choose routes that are less than direct or walk 5 blocks to take the bus home rather than a half block to the subway. If you drive, park at the furthest (safe) spot from the shop you're going to. Even a few extra steps adds up fast!

Pedometers

Using a pedometer is an easy way to get exercise. I am trying to get to 10,000 steps and I have turned it into a game by challenging myself to add a mere 50 steps to the previous day's total. emoticon

Exercise contract

It's ok to take a break from working out. The key is to never let more than one day pass without exercising. One day is a break, two days is the start of a downhill slide. Make a contract with yourself that you will not let more than one day pass without your normally planned exercise.

The One More Minute Secret

If you're ready to quit think to yourself "can i make it through just one more minute" and when that minutes up... think the same thing -- before you know it, you've done another ten, fifteen, or thirty minutes.

Beauty: Grandma's Secret

My grandmother, my mother, and my sister are the most beautiful women I know. My grandmother's pictures were used in a photography store for business back in the 1940's. Secret: She always taught me to keep my eyebrows shaped and never leave the house without lined lips! She is still a beauty!

snack secret

I've always loved to snack, and recently my physician advised me to eat 2-3 snacks a day in addition to 3 light regular meals. Whoopee! But how to keep the calories in check? I've learned to prepare 50- calorie snacks of my favorite healthy snack foods ahead of time. Just now, I ate a 30-calorie slice of light cheese. Tonight I'm looking forward to my homemade 50-calorie trail mix baggie right before turning out the lights. And my favorite is barley mixed with sugar free strawberry syrup. Yum!

When something gets tough - new incline on the treadmill, yet another fast song in Zumba class - SMILE! If you remember to smile while you exercise it can make what you're doing seem so much easier. You'll be surprised by what you can accomplish when you're having fun!

Walk at night

If you live in a safe area, walking at night during the summer makes for a much cooler walk. We feel more energetic walking after dark than under the hot sun, so we walk farther & faster & run into less traffic.... (more info)
