Warm-up before bed

It seems as if, as soon as I crawl into bed & settle down, I am immediately cold. When I'm cold, i can't fall asleep. So I spend about 15 min. before going to bed walking in place. I've heard that physical activity before bed is not conducive to sleep, but if I'm cold I can't sleep anyway. A brisk walk in place while doing arm movements (arm circles, shadow boxing, pumping my arms) warms me up, adds 1500-2000 steps to my day, and puts me to sleep rather quickly.

Fed up with bank fees?

Check out this CNN Money article about "7 banks that are still awesome":

EL

Not
every one of them will be good for a particular individual, but many offer no ATM fees (or reimburse you for the fees), pay interest on checking accounts, offer higher than average yields on savings, etc.

Read the summary for each bank and then I suggest you call or go online for more details.

What to do with free return-address labels

You probably receive hundreds of return address labels in the mail. (I had enough to wallpaper a large room.) While watching TV, I cut my name and address off the labels and then give the remaining images to children in my family or leave them in the break room at work for others to take home. I keep ones I think won't interest them, but pass on images of flags, animals, flowers, and other colorful designs to the kids.

Weighing corn on the cob

Instead of cutting the corn off the cob, weigh your corn on the cob, eat the corn, weigh the leftover cob, subtract. Then you'll know exactly how much you've eaten. (I weigh in grams for accuracy.)

Simple Fast-food or Restaurant Strategy

Instead of agonizing over what to eat, stick to this simple strategy: salad topped with grilled chicken, skip the croutons, light dressing on the side, water or unsweetened coffee or tea. Dip the tines of our fork into the dressing to get a taste in each bite. You'll probably eat less than half of the dressing this way. You should easily be able to eat less than 500 calories for the meal while getting your veggies and protein. (click title for more info)

Set a goal

Setting a specific goal for myself helped me to start & continue to lose weight. and motivate me for over a year.

I had lived out of the country for a while. When I left I was VERY skinny.

Over the intervening 40 yrs. I had gained 110 lbs. I wanted to go back for a visit, so I set a goal of losing at least 80 of that. I am traveling next month. As of yesterday, I had lost 85 lbs, and probably can lose a few more before I leave. (click title to continue)

Breaking a plateau

I used to go to the Y 3X/wk & work out with kettlebells at home 3X/wk. Then I hit a plateau. Everyone says that exercising too much can backfire, but I figured if I added to it gradually, it might work. So on days when I didn't go to the Y, I went for a 15 minute "mosey" around the block. Gradually, I added time and walked faster until I was doing a least 30 minutes at a good clip. Then I slowly added a walk... (click title for more)

Versatile bridesmaid/prom
/party
dresses

I happened on a web site that offers bridesmaid dresses that can be wrapped and configued in a variety of ways. They come in many colors (to match or coordinate) and you can add many different accessories (flowers, headbands, purses, shawls.) The short version is $140, long $180. I haven't purchased a dress like this for ages, but that seemed like a reasonable price ---and because the dress is so versatile, it could be worn strapless, with one bare shoulder, look like (click title for url)

Restaurant survival guide

Make good choices. Ask if you can have an extra vegetable instead of rice, potato or pasta & whole wheat instead of white bread. Most restaurant meals are larger than meals eaten at home, so as soon as a meal is before you, ask for a container to take home the leftovers. But, don't wait to see what is leftover. Immediately divide everything in half. Eat the half left on your plate & take the rest home. One exception is if the vegetable or salad portions are...(click title for more info)
