I hadn't noticed until I started Spark People that I was eating next to no protein! I was tired and felt hungry all the time. It was a challenge to add enough protein to my diet to meet my minimum daily requirement, but once I did I've never felt better. I feel full longer, have more energy and stamina, and my body just seems to work better.
Exercise and burning calories are essential parts of losing and then, eventually maintaining weight. The gym is great but, there are so many other ways to squeeze in exercise! Exercise can be vacuuming and mopping the house to some good tunes, taking the dog for an extra long walk, chasing your toddler around the park, gardening with the family, going to the mall a half hour before the movie to walk around it briskly, washing the car, sweeping the driveway, swimming, etc. POSSIBILITIES ENDLESS!
Staying busy is a good way to stop boredom eating. When you are cleaning out your closets or organizing your christmas decorations, you arent thinking about food. At the end of the day, you've been active, avoided boredom eating and have a visible accomplishment
When I want to eat something I probably shouldn't, I go ahead and log the food. After analyzing the fat/calories, I can decide whether it's worth it to me to eat it. If it is, I go ahead and eat a serving. If not, I can just delete that food from my day and move on.
I discovered Leslie Sansone's "walk away the pounds" dvd's several years ago but just started using them faithfully about 2 years ago. The miles go by fast and it's a great workout! You get a much better workout than outside walking because you use resistance and weights. I love it.
I've found in the evening that I can power through that craving for a drink (wine, cocktail, etc.) by making myself a different, special drink, like tea, a smoothie, fresh juice, etc. You start to associate that with "unwinding" instead of alcohol and get hydrated and healthy, too.
It's so easy to get into a rut with exercise, doing the same things over and over. But that can get boring after awhile. So, to shake things up and keep it interesting, try a class you've never done (or a new type of DVD). You might just find a new favorite!
I went through my list of exercises, yesterday. I don't have any dumb bells nor any kind of home gym and I can't afford a gym membership. My resistance band snapped under the pressure! LOL What I can afford is WATER! 1L weighs 1 Kg or 2.2 lbs so a 500 mL bottle weighs 1.1 lbs and a 1.5 L water bottle weighs 3.3 lbs!
I eat a salad every day for lunch. When it's time to get it ready, I prepare twice as much and put half in the refrigerator for later. That way, I know I'll get those vegetables in at dinner time and I won't have to make any more food decisions as my day begins to slow down. And if I find something better for dinner, I have a salad all ready for tomorrow!!
