My secret weapon

My favorite workout is using Leslie Sansone DVDs her walking programs. I'm addicted to them.

Same Time Each Day

It's easy to find excuses not to exercise. I combat this by exercising the same hour of the day each day. So I know from 10 to 11:30 I walk. This way it becomes a habit you don't think about, you just do it.

Sticker Shock or Encouragement

I use a sticker system for visual help with my program. I put a red sticker on the days that I blow it. I use a yellow sticker if it was a maintence type day (200 calories above my range). A green sticker if I stayed in my calorie range. This system helps me see how I'm doing and provides feedback when the scale doesn't say what I want to hear.

Every little bit counts!

I now take my lunch to work and only drink water...Everytime I feel like that coffee or cake that I used to buy at the cafe, I go into my online banking, and transfer the amount that the coffee and cake would cost me, straight into my savings account. You would not believe how much I am saving!

Plan for commitment

I set alarms in my phone to keep me on track. I have an alarm for blogging my progress, I have an alarm for working out, etc. These alarms are helping me hold myself accountable. It's hard to "forget" when you have an alarm interrupting you.

Just go to bed!

I am really bad about snacking at night. I start to get really hungry (or bored?) around 9pm. So when that happens and I don't want to cheat, I just go to bed early instead of staying up til my usual 11. And as a result, I get more sleep and watch less TV too! It's a win-win.

List Your Favorite Foods That Are Healthy

So many times we think of what we can't have on an eating change/plan. I made of list of everything I love that is fresh, whole food, and I buy that food and plan my meals. It really makes you feel like you're treating yourself to the best things to eat. For example, I like Shrimp, so i buy the frozen shrimp and thaw it to throw into recipes, or eat alone. Make yourself feel special, because you are, no matter how much weight you need to lose.

Trick yourself with size & colors!

Did you know that the colors red, orange & yellow can actually make you desire to eat something? On the other hand, the color blue can suppress your appetite. Size also has a lot to do with perspective. If you fix & eat your meal off of a small plate, you feel like you are eating more than if you put it on a large plate. Soooo,,, eating your meals off of small, blue plates can trick your mind into thinking you're eating more than you are!

One way to declutter

I found a wonderful website called www.freecycle.org (note, it's NOT freecycle.com!) which has helped me declutter my house. When I have clothes my kids have outgrown or items I no longer want, I just post a message to my local chapter. Within a day or two, there is usually someone who needs the item who takes it for free. It's a win-win situation that (to me) is easier than trying to store unwanted items for a garage sale.

The "Motivation" Trap

“The whole idea of motivation is a trap. Forget motivation. Just do it. Exercise, lose weight, test your blood sugar, or whatever. Do it without motivation. And then, guess what? After you start doing the thing, that's when the motivation comes and makes it easy for you to keep on doing it.” - John Maxwell

Whether you are motivated or not -- do it anyway! That really hit home with me!
