Podcasts!

I'm the kind of person who needs to be mentally distracted during exercise, and I've discovered the perfect solution: podcasts! You can download podcasts about any topic that interests you, from fitness to literature to language-learning and beyond. They range in length from a few minutes to over an hour, and best of all: they're FREE! So download dozens onto your iPod and start listening. Your workout will be over before you know it!

Plan an exciting late-night snack

If you have a late-night snacking problem, like I do, try this: Early in the day, plan a late-night snack you can look forward to, that will fit into your daily calorie plan but taste great too. Tell yourself that if you waste your budgeted calories too soon on other nighttime snacks, you have to skip it. Knowing that there's a good snack waiting for you later on will prevent you from eating a bunch of other snacks that aren't worth the calories.

Celebrate every minute of your journey towards your goal!

Now that I've made a commitment to losing weight, I've started to love my body more than I ever have. Even though I can't see any tangible changes yet, I know that every single minute I am moving closer to my goal, and I know that I look and feel ever-so-slightly better than I did yesterday. I'm also much less likely to stress and complain about the things I dislike about my body, because I know that I'm doing something about them! Remember: If you can change your mind, you can change anything.

The key to drinking enough water...

This might sound obvious, but I find that the biggest factor in drinking enough water every day is simply having a water bottle nearby. I'm pretty lazy, so if I don't have one within reach, I'll wait until I'm really thirsty to get up for water. But if I have a water bottle on hand, I'll find myself finishing it off without even thinking about it! Then, it's no longer a chore, it's just natural and easy.

If you love cheese...then only eat it when you'll appreciate it!

I ADORE cheese. But when I decided to lose weight, I knew I would have to start cutting back. It was sad to think of all the ways I'd have to cut cheese out of my diet...until I realized that often, when I add cheese to something, I'm not truly appreciating its flavor. On some sandwiches, pastas, or salads, I can barely even taste the cheese. So I decided that I would only eat cheese when I knew I was going to appreciate its flavor to its fullest. Now I'm eating less and not missing it at all!

The 10 most powerful 2-letter words

I recently heard this sentence, known as the 10 most powerful 2-letter words:

IF IT IS TO BE, IT IS UP TO ME.

It reminded me that if I ever want to lose weight, I'm the one who has to do it. No one else can do it for me.

I wrote those 10 words on a piece of paper and hung it up where I'll see it every day!

Make your own weight-loss rewards system

I just made a Word document that lays out all the ways in which I'll reward myself for reaching each of my target weight goals. I've decided to reward myself in a small (NON-FOOD) way for every 5 pounds I lose, in a bigger way for every 10 I lose, etc., with one huge reward for reaching my final goal. Having it all written out, with encouraging words for myself, and sitting in the middle of my computer desktop is the ultimate motivation!

Break up your workout

Sometimes when I'm running on the treadmill or elliptical, I feel like I'll never make it to my calorie-burning goal for the day. So I hop off after I've burned 100 or 200 calories, then go and do my strength training, or get a drink of water, or go to the bathroom...and then I hop back on. Burning 200 calories twice somehow feels less daunting than burning 400 in one go!
