A lot of people tell you to drink water before a meal to fill up and you won't eat as much. But, that does not help me at all. I like food and I love cooking, and I think food is meant to be enjoyed. What helps me is when I plate my food with appropriate portions, eat what I have on my plate then drink water afterwards. I immediately feel full and WON'T get back up for seconds. In fact, I'd feel so full that I would need to take a walk afterwards!
I find that I can easily wake up at 5:00 AM and go to the gym when I have someone at the gym that will be there to greet me by name. That way, when I skip days, that person is right there to ask me "Where have you been??" I usually look at it as a challenge..how long can we go before we have to ask each other "where have you been?" The person who asks first wins..
