The Three Rs of Lifestyle Change Applied to Exercise

Exercise can be tough - to start, and to keep going. Mentally switching gears off of grumpiness and onto 'The Three Rs' helps me persevere.

REMEMBER: self discipline is remembering what you REALLY want.
RECORD: everything, good & bad; track/write it down.
REWARD: yourself for goals met.

"Nothing changes IF nothing changes!"

When I start to feel overwhelmed, and am tempted to fall back into old comfortable behaviors, this simple slogan helps me to re-focus and get back on track.

Over 50 and exercising

I have found that I can do almost any exercise at 55 years old. We can modify our exercise to low impact when necessary. But exercising at any age is so beneficial. It is also FUN!! emoticon

Walking tours

I discovered a self-walking tour book at the library for areas within driving distances from where I live. By spending my weekends on these tours, it makes exercising fun as I follow the history and paths of these tours.

Plateaus

Everybody hits them, they are frustrating but the good news is everyone can break through them. They key is to constantly keep switching up your program, whether its lifting weights or using cardio equipment. When the scale stops or your lifting becomes stagnant switch up the exercises you do for a couple weeks and then go back to your favorite workout. Maybe even take a week off. Keep your diet in check and you'll find yourself surpassing even the toughest goals. YOU CAN DO IT!

10 minutes

I know this is not new, but it truly works. I was not feeling good this week and still wanted to get my exercise in. I tried to do it in 10 minute increments. I did the elliptical, treadmill, bike for 10 minutes at a time and by the end of the day I had 2 hours in!

Stir Fry - Yummy and Low Calorie

One of my greatest weight loss secrets is cooking stir fry. Stir fry is simple to prepare, you can use almost any foods, and is generally very low calorie.

Spray a Wok with cooking spray (about 15 calories to coat a medium pan), toss in all the veggies you want (onions, peppers, zuccini, broccoli, really anything), add some lean meat (beef, chicken, pork) and stir, stir, stir.

You can add garlic, soy sause, a bit of bbq sauce, etc. for flavor if you want!!

YUM YUM!!!!

Thicken Your Soups/Chili Naturally!

When making any soups, stews or chili's with beans mash them a bit once you've submerged them in the liquid. This naturally thickens the liquid to a great consistency! This will also cut down your use of "cream" soups or flour (which means less calories!) Bon Apetit!
