I often find myself at potluck dinners, and I am fortunate when they have the divided paper plates. I always fill the largest side section of the plate with green salad and raw vegetables. I put other vegetables in the mid sized compartment and the meat and rest of the "bad for you stuff" in the smallest compartment. Every lady scrutinizes my plate and wants to know if I liked what she made--I'm the pastor. I can control portions better, get filled up, and not hurt anyone's feelings.
I am easily persuaded to stop at the convenience store to get a snack when I am out running errands. When I do this, I walk out the door having spent $5.00 on an unhealthy snack and soda. Therefore I have purchased some healthier snack choices along with some flavored bottled water, and I lock them in the tool box of my truck in a plastic container. If I feel tempted to stop at the store for a snack, I will pull over, get in my "goodie box" and have a snack that is healthier and cheaper.
I have found that I eat better if I will plan the meal and set a table, using the china, crystal, silver, and nice linens. It is a lot more trouble to get all this stuff out, but if I prepare a meal and serve it in this manner, I am less likely to inhale it quickly and long for more food later. We will sometimes eat in courses, which makes meal time last longer. My wife and kids get bored with this, but it is a good time for all of us. Its especially fun when we "dress" for dinner.
I have found that eating a well balanced breakfast makes a huge difference in my eating habits all day long. I usually have scrambled eggs, turkey bacon, a piece of fruit, a slice of whole wheat toast, and cup of yogurt. I drink 8 oz of water before a morsel touches my mouth. I have also found if I will sit down with the breakfast and eat rather than inhale it, that I can usually make it to lunch without starving to death, thus keeping me from over indulging at lunch time.
I find that if I think I am hungry, I am probably just wanting something to do. I will get something to drink sich as water, unsweet tea, coffee, or diet soda, sit down with a book, newspaper, internet, or writing tablet and drink my drink while I read, write or surf.
