I have found that most recipes can be made with far fewer ingredients than they call for, especially if you add spices. I do this because I can't afford to get extra ingredients, but I am desperately trying to eat healthy. So I leave out the things that would make the food cost more than the basic food itself, and if you spice it up, it's tasty anyway.
Shop late on the last day of the sale week, when sale items are likely to be in short supply. Buy all remaining packages of what you want, then go to customer service and get a raincheck., so you can buy again when the item is NOT on sale. Also, late in the day, you are more likely to find distressed packages which are - or can be - marked way down. I can get as much as 80-85% OFF by ASKING for it. They'd be throwing the package away within hours!
I ONLY eat egg whites now, not whole eggs. I KNOW I could never throw the yolks away - I am unable to throw away even the teeniest part of food I paid for EVER - ANY drop of food I spent money on WILL be eaten or - better yet - saved for ANOTHER meal. I buy egg whites on sale, take all the packages on the shelf, then get a raincheck so I can get more when I need them and they are NOT on sale. I don't pay more for them than I would for eggs, and they are healthier.
Just ask yourself: " Is a moment on the lips worth a month on the hips?" before you dig in. Chances are, nothing really tastes that good when you think about it. Or, just take one bite and savor the flavor.
