Nothing is off limits but eating more fruits/veggies & less bread, rice & pasta is working. I'm not tracking but try to eat fewer servings of starches and eat them earlier in the day. It is good for me to eat a lean meat, veggies & skim milk for dinner. It is pretty simple and it is doing the trick.
I love carbs and sometimes don't get enough fruit/veggies because I fill up on them. I started a new way of eating. I alternate between carbs & fruit/veggie choices. So for breakfast if I eat a carb like toast, then next thing I eat is a fruit like a banana. If I have a snack that is a carb like crackers, the next thing I eat is another fruit, etc.
I buy a bag of carrots and bring to work so everyday I can munch on some during lunch. I also bring in an orange & banana everyday. I have the banana as my mid morning snack and the orange at lunch. I also have a veggie at lunch and always a veggie at dinner. If I miss a fruit/veggie during lunch I just add an extra at dinner. This has really kept me away from unhealthy snacking and too many carbs.
The best thing I did for maintenance was to get rid of all my old clothes. I did wear them loose for a while but then when I started buying new clothes I got rid of them and never looked back. I had lost weight before and kept the old clothes and ended up having to wear them again. I think not wanting to spend the money buying big clothes is a great motivator.
There is always food being brought in to the office and in Dec. it is even worse. I have found I can resist the temptation by having a constant reminder why I am passing by those cookies or chocolate. I have a snorkling trip planned for Mar. '13 and I also know if I start eating alot of unhealthy food it will effect my gall bladder. It is just a matter of remembering that when I am tempted. I do allow myself a treat once in a while but then it is strictly limited only 2 pieces no exceptions!
I found a cold weather exercise I can do inside. It is something that I don't normally like to do - housework. I stopped doing the spring cleaning in the spring (I would much rather be outside then) but I'm doing it now. The advantage of this on top of burning the calories is the house will look great for the holidays. Like so many other things it is just a matter of my attitude.
Where I work the spot people leave food is right in front of my desk and people are always bringing in doughnuts. I have found a trick that keeps me out of them. I only allow myself to eat one kind (Boston cream). If there isn't one of those in the box, I can stay out of it. If I wait to check to see if there is one, maybe someone else has taken it already. This way I'm not telling myself I can never eat a doughnut but at least I only have one once in a while.
I have found some good substitutes for unhealthy snacks. I used flavored teas with sugar substitute, cold broccoli (cooked) with light Italian dressing, canned fruit. These give me the flavor I'm craving without all the fat and extra sugar.
