Bananas: the hunger buster

Read this article on Yahoo.

Ever grab a snack but then feel hungry again 20 minutes later? Next time, reach for a banana. Itís loaded with Resistant Starch (RS), a healthy carb that fills you up and helps to boost your metabolism. Slightly underripe medium-sized bananas have 12.5 grams of RSómore than most other foods. Ripe bananas give you 4.7 grams of RS, still enough to keep hunger pangs away.

Cover the clock

Once I have set the timer on the treadmill I cover the time, calories burned, lap number and distance I have gone with black electrical tape. If you are a clock watcher like I am (yes even with the tv going or music on I am still counting down the seconds if I can see them) this takes away the option of watching the clock forcing you to concentrate on something else. I ended up going the entire 40 minutes and I never go the entire time I set. Also the tape is easy to peel off and doesn't leave residue.

Walk with a purpose

A few years ago I used to walk 2 - 3 hours a day. Of course, I lived in Chicago, did not have a car and was too cheap to pay for public transportation. BUT I made that choice also. Meaning, when I had to go somewhere within walking distance (grocery store, friend's house, church, work, etc) I made a choice every morning to walk instead of take the bus, get a ride, etc. It was so much easier and exciting than the treadmill.

Commercial Time = Chore TIme

Whenever I plan an evening of being a couch potato I make myself get up at every commercial break and do a chore. Most chores just take the 2 - 3 minute break. It gets me off the couch every little bit AND I get my chores done without feeling like a slave to housework.

If you can't say something nice....

really, don't say anything at all. Especially in response to another person. Especially here.

I have seen several responses to blogs that were very critical. Intent is not important...if it sounds negative at all, keep it to yourself!

It is hard enough staying motivated to change your lifestyle; receiving criticism from others in the same boat doesn't make it any easier.

And yes, I recognize the irony in posting this!!

Time Marches On

My uncle used to say, "A year is going to pass regardless of what I do or don't do. I might as well do all I can!". When I was younger I didn't grasp the wisdom in this but now that I am older, I get it.

You sit on your couch all day, the day still passes. You didn't slow down time. If a year is going to pass, I might as well get skinnier as it passes!

I tell myself this every time I don't want to work out. Yep, that means every day!!

Hot Milk

Whenever I am in the mood for something sweet and a piece of fruit won't work I pop a glass of milk in the microwave for 2 minutes (any more time and it overflows) then add 2 packets of sweetener to it. It's like a homemade vanilla creme from starbucks but with fewer calories. (90 for a glass of skim milk). It also reminds me of what a hot vanilla milkshake might taste like.

You get added calcium AND you stay away from other sweets and empty calories! Add a drop of vanilla to it as well!

Cottage Cheese is an Excellent Additive

I use cottage cheese in place of salad dressings but I also use it in place of sour cream and even put it on frozen dinners. It gives me added protein and is a lot healthier alternative to dressings, regular cheese, etc.

Those Healthy Choice dinners, the ones that have the dessert, I add cottage cheese to every portion of the dinner, even the dessert. It makes the dessert bigger and adds protein! emoticon

My Motivation Changes

Every time I exercise. The main thing for me is figuring out which one I need today. Sometimes I set the program on the treadmill for 100 minutes....I just do 40 or 50 but I know if I set it for 40 minutes I would only do 20. Sometimes I set it for 15 minutes cause it motivates me to see my progress moving a bar ever 45 seconds. I then do the routine 2 times. Sometimes I just keep telling myself "one more minute, you can do one more minute" 30 times in one workout (once a minute, 30 minutes).
