I used Sparkmaps to plot my total monthly fitness miles westward. Horrors, between March 26, when I got the idea, and April 26 I only made it as far as Turbeville, SC--I can do better than that! Just pick a neat location within 100 to 150 miles of your home and see if you can walk there in a month.
Ground turkey can be rather high in fat and calories. I was about to buy my usual 96/4 ground beef to make chili, but decided instead to try to shave some calories by making turkey chili. I'm glad I read the label--the turkey was way higher in calories! The ground turkey was 85/15--that's a lot of extra fat. I did find a company that had 96/4 white meat only ground turkey--and the calories were the same as my ground beef, 140 cals. per 4 oz. serving, so I decided to stick with the beef.
I know a lot of people don't use artificial sweetners, but for those of us who do, a packet or two of sugar-free jello along with some dried fruit can add a lot of interest to whole-grain muffins, without adding a lot of calories. If you prefer a lighter fruit flavor from just one pack of jello, add a little Stevia in the Raw, since one packet may not be enough sweetner for your taste. My favorite is adding orange jello with craisens and walnuts.
I added up the calories, nutrients, etc. for my own recipes and entered them in my nutrition tracker. What a shock! Although I add no extra salt, my own soups had more sodium than Campbell's--because I use bouillion and canned ingredients. Even switching to the low sodium broths didn't help all that much. I read a SparkPeople Article that suggested avoiding canned vegetables and beans and using frozen vegetables and dried beans instead. What a difference it made in the sodium count.
Spinach and Turmeric are two of the healthiest foods going, but they are often absent in the American diet. I always make a point of throwing both these ingredients into hearty soups and stews. Unless you really overdo it, both ingredients just kind of blend in without changing the flavor of your recipe and deliver a whopping dose of antioxidents to your meal.
I discovered that just one minute of walking burns a little more than the calories in one carb. This provides me with the motivation I need to go just a little longer and farther when I don't feel like walking--just 10 more minutes to kill 10 more carbs!
I don't want to be the cheapo old witch of the neighborhood, but I also don't want Halloween candy in my house, before, during, or after the little zombies make their rounds. What to do? I am going to get some rolls of quarters and give each little vampire 50 cents--that way if the little hobgobblins want to buy their own candy so they can get fat and rot their teeth, it isn't my doing--they could choose to use it to buy carrot sticks, right?
After careful investing, I lost 1/3 of my savings and IRA's in two major stock market crashes, so I learned this simple system and never lost money again. I keep all my money out of the market until there is a major crash (below 8000). Then I buy a no-load Stock Index Fund. I may wait years, but when the Dow reaches 10,500, I sell immediately and stay out of the market until the next major crash, then do it again. You might feel comfortable with a different magic sell number--10000 maybe?
