My husband and I have learned the magical powers of the word "no". By using it often we have become nearly debt-free owing less than $100K on our house. No car loans. No credit cards. No student loans. We raised two boys on two to four part-time jobs. And that includes paying for health insurance and saving for our retirement. We did it by saying "no" to things we didn't need and applying our focus on our goal of being completely debt-free by age 55. (we're going to make it 2 yrs early!)
We needed something to organize our knit caps, gloves, mittens, etc. Just tossing them on the shelf wasn't working. So I bought a kids' plastic/vinyl hanging shoe rack - the kind with pockets that are the size of a toddler's shoe - and hung that in the closet. It has 9 compartments, so we can keep our gloves, mittens, and hats all in one place, out of the way, and off the floor. And since I bought it at the Dollar Store, it was a pretty good price, too!
On Saturday I plan my lunches for the next work week, shop for the food on Sunday and do all the cooking, and then I have everything made and in containers for Monday through Friday. No excuse to not eat properly, no fast-food. All that I have to do is grab a stack of Rubbermaid containers, pop them in my lunchbox with a blue ice pack, and head off to work each day!
Do you have a great idea for a challenge? Do you think a bunch of your friends would like to join you in that challenge? (or even a half dozen of them?!) Then form your own challenge team, invite your friends, and get busy with that challenge! A team doesn't have to be in place for years and years to do its job. And you don't have to open it to everyone to get great benefits from your challenge Spark Team!
This is my favorite motivational quote. If I could get everyone to read it, believe it, and live it, we could each do impressive and mighty things. I challenge you to really LIVE your life this week.
We all have heard the adage "Listen to your body". But we have to take it one step further. After we listen to our bodies, we need to heed what they tell us. If it is telling me to slow down, I need to slow down, really rest. If it is telling me it are tired all the time I need to think about it. Am I getting enough sleep? Do I need to eat more because of all the exercise I am doing? Our bodies can help us a lot, but we have to pay attention and do what they say!
It is so easy to look at family gatherings and think "I can never be thin - look at my family!" Blaming my weight on my genes is just an excuse not a reason. So when I look at my family I look at them with love and then resolve not to let myself be lulled into thinking that I can't determine my own fate. Just 'cause your body is pre-programmed to WANT to eat potato salad all afternoon doesn't mean you have to do it!
I collect motivational sayings and post them all over the wall in my workout room (as soon as my son moved out I took over his bedroom!) Every morning when I go in there to exercise I see all of these motivational quotes and photos, and it reinvigorates me.
It's pretty simple - don't buy foods that encourage you to binge. And don't carry money with you if you can't trust yourself to drive by McDs or Starbucks without stopping. If it's not available you can't overdo it!
As you travel on this path to a healthier you, don't let others force you to choose between what you know is right and healthy for you and what they want you to do. There are some things that should never be compromised and what is best for you is one of them!
