Don't overdo your exercise - don't set yourself up for failure. If you're new to the game, take it easy right out of the gate. Set a smaller goal, and feel great when you accomplish it! Add on more if you want to. I found that saying I would workout 6 times a week, and then not being able to, is what would make me feel lazy and like I failed. But telling myself I will workout 3 times a week, and being able to do so, keeps me motivated. Plus, bonus when I CAN fit more in!
I always overpack my lunchbox - not because I want to overeat, but because I love having options. Having the option to choose whether I want to eat an orange or an apple, yogurt or string cheese, really helps me stay on track with my food choices. If I limit what I bring, I'm more likely to not want it and snack on something I shouldn't be eating. But having the choice of choosing what I want makes me eat something that I want instead of HAVING to eat what is there.
I have found that exercising first thing in the morning can really help me stay on target for the whole day. For example, when tempted by a craving or offered something I shouldn't eat, I find myself thinking, "I already worked out today and I'm doing so well - I don't need that!" If I haven't worked out I'm more likely to eat badly, and THEN I may not work out later because I'll be thinking, "Well, I've already ruined today, might as well start fresh tomorrow."
Too many people force themselves to stick to a strict diet or eat things they don't like, simply because they're good for you. Experiment! Try out new things, and stick with the good, healthy foods that you like! For example, if you don't really like many veggies, there's nothing wrong with having fruit with your dinner. Sure, it might look a bit odd to eat salmon with a side of watermelon, but if YOU like it then go for it! You will stick with the program more if you like what you're eating.
When I get home from work, I change right into my workout clothes and shoes. That way, even if I have to do some sort of chore before working out (like wash out my lunch box or throw in a load of laundry), I can't get lazy and change my mind about working out. I'm already in the clothes and ready to go.
