Managing Holiday Splurges

My secret for holiday eating: I told myself I could go over no more than 2lbs gaining weight back for the holidays. I kept myself in check by still weighing myself everyday and when I splurged on cookies, cake or carbs, I did it moderately. I only had a small slice of cake or 2 cookies or a small helping of mac n cheese. I kept it to 2-3 small splurges per day and still exercised as well. I kept to my 2lb over goal and now I'm back on track! emoticon

Count everyday activities

Not only do I walk the dog and walk at work with a pedometer but whenever I clean house, go bowling (every weekend), do yard work, go for a bike ride, etc...log it! It counts as exercise! It may not be heavy cardio but you are being active and exercising so log it and it will motivate you to do more to see those exercise minutes go up!

Sex and preventing UTIs

Cranbery juice is great for preventing UTIs but what happens if you don't like cranberry juice? Check the vitamin aisle for cranberry fruit pills! I used to get horrible UTIs especially after intercourse. Now I always take a few cranberry pills before hand and I haven't had a UTI in about 10 years. Make sure you empty your bladder before and after as well.

Print a picture of yourself that you don't like

Take a pic of yourself that you don't like, one where you may look overweight or tired. Print out that pic and put it on the fridge, pantry, keep it with you. Remind yourself that you are working to change that image and you never want to look like that again. We don't see ourselves the same way in a picture as we do when we look in the mirror. When you reach a goal, take another pic and post it next to the bad one. It will inspire you even more!

Exercise for limited mobility

Have limited mobility from extreme weight, joint problems or just can't handle the physical demand that walking/running puts on your body, water aerobics is GREAT! Water takes the pressure off joints and adds resistance. I did it when I was pregnant because I was too bulky to walk or run. It kept me active and didn't hurt my body or baby. There are lots of other people there just like you trying to get in/stay in shape so don't be self conscious about your bathing suit body image. emoticon

Increasing good fluid intake

I am not a fan of plain water & I don't like those water additives either. I make myself drink 1 glass of water with breakfast then at work I fill up a 16 oz mug with water and 1 green tea bag. I drink it over ice and do that about 4 times a day. VIOLA! Good fluid increased to 9 cups just at work. At home I like club soda with true lime/orange.This method helped me kick my soda habit. I no longer crave soda nor do I drink it because I prefer the tea or club soda instead. emoticon
