Getting salad dressing on the side is a no brainer when trying to eat better, but often the containers they bring out contain more dressing than they would have put on the salad in the first place! Dip your fork into your dressing before getting a bit of salad. That way every bite has a bit of dressing, but you save lots of calories. I can generally eat an entire dinner salad with 1 tsbp (or less) of dressing this way.
Many foods, especially boxed rice mixes, call for butter. This is really only for flavor, and is not crucial to the cooking process. To keep the flavor without adding fat or calories, I substitute chicken broth for part of the water. This also works well when cooling fresh veggies like green beans or broccoli.
I love diet coke, but it can get in the way of drinking enough water. So I allow myself as much dc as I want, but only after I have finished my water for the day. Then, if I want a coke, it feels like a treat and I really taste it, and I'm so full from water, I usually dont want any.
Many stores list a survey on the bottom of receipts where the incentive for you taking the time to complete the survey is a coupon. I always take a few moments to do this. As a result, I always have a 15% off coupon to my favorite department store, and always get free salads or breadsticks at a favorite pizza place. A quick email about exceptional (or bad) service also often earns some type of reward.
