The best way I've found to not give in to temptation between meals is to keep myself busy. It's harder to focus on hunger or snacking itches when I'm busy with work or reading a great article, or talking to friends. When that Hostess cake calls your name, do anything it takes to get your mind off it.
This is a great money-saving move! Pick one day per month (or week) to clean out the pantry/fridge/freezer. Go over what you have and get creative to make something from it. Make soup, casserole, stir fry, whatever you can think of. If you can stretch it to a week, more power to you! It prevents older food from going to waste and saves you from a grocery run for one more day.
Whenever you pay for something in cash, keep the change in a jar somewhere. Similarly, you can pick a denomination like a $5 or a $10 and every time you get one you put it away. I've done this with a $5 bill, and ended up saving enough in 6 months to pay for a spring break cruise!
