Having a dog really pays off

Every morning my dog and I go for a walk. If I don't take her she will whine until I do. The whining is annoying so I take her in the snow, rain, fog, anything. If she doesn't want to go I still make myself go because I feel like I can take on the day.

Put your goals where you can see them

One reason I want to lose weight is to resume mountaineering. So I bought a magnetic picture of Mount Rainier and put it on the frig where I see it everyday. I also put a picture of a runner with the type of body I hope to have on the inside of my gym locker. Both motivate me on a daily basis.

Every day is a new day

Yes, it's trite, but no matter how well or poorly yesterday's eating or exercising went, you get another chance to do it better today!

Going to the gym

I find it helpful to set a specific time by which I will go to the gym. I decided that by 9:00 a.m. I need to be on my way. This keeps me from procrastinating by doing other things and also takes away the question of "Am I going today?" I have learned that 9:00 gives me enough time to do the early morning chores and yet doesn't use up my whole morning. I feel energized and ready to go when my exercise routine is over.

Meat for minimal calories

I love meat and have been a big meat eater. The recommended 3oz is often not enough to satisfy me.

I've been altering my recipes and putting half and half, meat and mushrooms. I find this feels like meat and satisfies like meat without all the calories.

Focus

Focus on the journey, not the destination. Joy is found not in finishing an activity, but in doing it.

Summer hydration

I drink more than the recommended 8 cups all summer due to the heat and outdoor activities. We just can't drink too much!

Keep it manageable

You do not need to go to the gym or exercise for 3 hours a day to lose weight or maintain a healthy lifestyle. You need to find what works for you as the most important thing is to ensure you find something you can maintain over time. I started by doing 30 minutes and now I spend about 1 hour doing exercise. I do mix it up to not get bored. There are some days I can spend 2 hours, but my usual workout is about 1 hour.
