Knitting - A Distraction From My Emotions And Eating

My emotions and thoughts sometimes get out of control and I turn to food to lessen the emotion. When I knit, I find that the racing thoughts and emotions lessen because it is distracting me from what is bothering me busy hand. Also, I use knitting as a distraction when I watch TV or DVDs. If I am knitting, my hands are busy which prevents me from eating.

Make A List of Alternate Activities to Eating

I have a list of alternate activities to eating posted on my refrigerator. I look at it and do one of them when I am tempted to overeat. On that list I have things like exercise, reading, knitting, listening to music, guided imagery, dance around the room, play with my cats, play a computer game, etc.

Wear A Pedometer From Morning Until Night

I have been wearing a pedometer from morning until night since 2001. I record my step counts and distance daily on an Excel spreadsheet. I average the step counts monthly along with my weight and exercise minutes. This gives me concrete evidence of my trends so I can make adjustments if needed.

Planning Your Meals

Developing a written meal plan which I follow every week is very helpful. I eat the same thing every Monday as I eat every other Monday, the same thing every Tuesday, etc. I develop special plans for days that occur regularly but not weekly. The plan is posted on the refrigerator.
